I just walked the dog, and there was a moth on the wall in the breezeway. Not just any moth. Oh, no. It was a Southern-fried MONSTER MOTH. How big was this moth? It's wingspan was at least as long as my palm from the tip of my index finger to my wrist. Maybe longer.

And you know how moths have those fuzzy horns? This fucker had horns big enough that I could see them CLEARLY from about five feet away.

God, I fucking hate bugs.

But it was probably EVER so beautiful if you really really looked at it. I've had several of them... one in Oz was literally the width of the window. a double slider mozzie window! it was two feet plus! across, but oooh, thank goodness the other side of the mossienet, but the wings were exquisitely gauzy velvet and the colours and markings. His tummy was just deepest dark velvet, and he had claws on his little toes that gripped the holes in the net. He had great ruby eyes and we 'conversed' for oh, a good half hour. I couldn't NOT look - he was so gorgeous, so handsome, so... 'strokable' with the velvet on him. aaahh.

And only two years ago there was one outside our supermarket in La Roche Bernard. He had just hatched, and he was a gorgeous creature with great pale whorls on his wings, Not as big quite as the Australian one, but really a good 18" and chocolate smeared caramel praline vanilla ice cream colours. I haven't seen one since, but oh my, so beautiful. Can hardly call them bugs.

I DO NOT WANT THEM FLYING ROUND MY HEAD THOUGH!!!!!!

I am with you on ROACHES... do not go to Oz if you don't like roaches... they are BIG and BLACk and have HUGE antennae. and climb on to the ceiling and then drop down on your bed!!!!! (Screams quietly and tries not to remember sitting on a moving toilet seat!) Loves and sympathies!!! Looloo.

Probably a big sphinx moth. They're huge, but harmless. I used to try raising them from cocoons occasionally.
