I sort of have a rule about seeing movies where the leading man is a professional wrestler. But the wishes of several friends and mostly positive reviews resulted in my trip to see _The Scorpion King_. So...you are asking...how bad was it? Well, though I hate to admit it, I enjoyed the film. Didn't LOVE it, but liked it.
Wait! Let me clarify that. I went into the theatre with VERY low expectations. I hoped _The Scorpion King_ would be better than the truly awful _Kull: The Conqueror, one of the most dreadful movies I have ever had the misfortune of seeing. _The Scorpion King_ was miles above that monumental stinker.
The Rock put on a better performance than I was expecting, and the story moved along at a breakneck pace. There were some nifty moments with cobras and fire ants. There was a camel that was a good deal smarter than some of the characters. There were battles, battles and more battles.
Now, this picture does makes The Scorpion King, a tragic but good-hearted soul. He is out to defeat a tyrant who is very like The Scorpion King character from _The Mummy Returns_. This is...problematic, unless you tell yourself that you will think about _The Scorpion King_ as a stand-alone film. Because like the two Mummy movies (which I enjoyed immensely), you can't think too much about the plot or the whole thing begins to unravel.
So _The Scorpion King_ gets a cautious thumbs-up for me. If you've got a cool and rainy Saturday, as we did here in Cleveland today, you could do worse than spending 90 minutes of it at the multiplex with this popcorn flick.
