If you haven't seen an episode of Farscape, you should. It is one of the best shows on television, or at least it was until Sci-Fi decided not to renew it for another season. This is its last. You can still watch it on Sci-Fi, or if you don't have cable or access to the Sci-Fi channel, you can rent episodes or best-of-season compilations from your local video store.

OK, if you do this and like the series, take some time to read through Fialka's blog and see what you can do to support the show. It doesn't take much time or effort to send out an e-mail or sign an online petition. If you want to go farther and send out a letter or fax, so much the better.

Of course, you'd do this because you like the show, but you should do it for another reason too. When channels produce innovative, clever series, people will come. They did for Babylon 5. They did for Buffy. However, if there is a change in management at the channel, even a show that is doing well can find itself cut from the programming schedule simply because it lost a champion or the new decision makers don't understand it or its appeal. Or its audience.

Buffy was lucky in this regard. When it left the WB, it found another home at UPN quite easily. The transition was smooth and painless for fans. The same was not true of the struggles of Babylon 5 and its somewhat inconsistent and disappointing final season when the show moved from its original channel (and I cannot for the life of me remember what that was) to TNT.

As a member of the SF audience, I'm always reluctant to start watching a new series because I'm afraid it will be torn away from me mid-story arc. I'm also getting more than a little tired of Star Trek spin-off after Star Trek spin-off while shows like Babylon 5 and Farscape don't get the recognition they deserve.

So by raising you voice in defense of Farscape, you also championing more thoughtful, innovative programming. And in the wastelands of the world of television, that is a very good thing.
