Spent the long holiday weekend in PA with Mom. The drive in was hairy. Much traffic, which buggered up all the construction areas across I-80. While I was stuck in one, I called Mom to tell her I was going to be late, and she told me that gas stations were running out of gas, so I had angst that I would get in and not be able to get back. Or, worse yet, that I would get stuck in the mountains of PA on the trip back in a lonely horror-movie town that had no gas.

The time in PA was spent visiting and shopping and watching the first Penn State game of the season, and they won. Yay! Less happily, we watched Katrina aftermath coverage. As I said in several people's journals, I have never been more ashamed of my government as I have been during this inexcusable tragedy.

Tomorrow is back to school and work. Sigh. But I'll be teaching Sin City in the morning and Dan Simmons "The River Styx Runs Upstream" at night.
