Yesterday, I got an iPhone. It's still in the box, as I was waiting to hear what Steve Jobs was going to roll out with the new generation phone. I have to admit, I'm conflicted about what to do.
The next gen iPhone (3G) has faster web access (could be up to four times faster) than the current model. However, it comes at a price in terms of battery life (a concern since Apple will not let you swap batteries on your own, so you can't carry along a spare and pop it in during your hour of need) and data plan cost. The cheapest iPhone package one can get now is $20 a month for 200 text messages and unlimited data transfer. This same plan will cost $30 a month on the 3G iPhone. The 3G also has GPS. The old phone does not, but you can call up mapping programs on the web should you be directionally challenged.
On a cosmetic note, the 3G phones will have black or white plastic covers, like the iPod, instead of the brushed metal backing that the current version has. Oh, and for those of you outside the US, the new iPhones are supposedly going to work in networks in17 countries outside the US. As I understand it, AT&T has partnering plans in place with providers in those other countries.
Most of the other enhancements are software driven, and those I would get anyhow when they are available when I synch up the machine. I have not yet popped into the AT&T store to see how much the old iPhones have been discounted in the wake of the 3G news, so that is still an unknown variable in the equation. One that might end up being the deciding factor.
Any thoughts on which phone would make me the shiniest iBarb?
