Today, I went to see District 9. Like most genre films, especially the one I am especially excited about, I go to the theatre with a mixture of excitement and dread. It's too easy for movies, especially movies that have CGI integral to the plot, to rely on the eye candy to try and carry the film-something that visuals alone (no matter how stunning) are not capable of doing. Happily, District 9 does not fall into this trap.

However, District 9 is not a happy film. It's not a comfortable film. It's not an easy film to watch. It's a bleak film about some of the ugliest parts of human nature, and daring to take a long look at the heart of darkness that beats in all of is makes it an important film.

If you are looking for a fun, end-of-summer, shoot-up-the-bad-aliens movie, pop in your copy of Independence Day, but if you are looking for a movie that does more and says more, a movie that gives a taste of how differently stories play out when they aren't told by Hollywood, head out to the multiplex and check out District 9.
