So today Brandon Sanderson's THE WAY OF KINGS, the first book in his new Stormlight Archives, was released. Naturally, I made bookstoring at lunch a priority. The 40% off coupon Barnes and Noble emailed me didn't hurt. I knew it was a big book to launch a big fat fantasy series. Hell, TOR released about twelve sample chapters in advance of the publication date. Despite this fact, I was still surprised as I bent down to the bottom shelf (where it was sitting), picked up a copy, and almost immediately dropped it.

ONE THOUSAND PAGES. It it one thousand pages long. Then there's a handful of afterwards pages. It's fucking HEAVY.

I also feel a little ashamed. See, there were more 40% off coupons. One was for a book they'd flagged as "If You Liked THE HUNGER GAMES, You'll Like This." I picked up a book called BLACK HOLE SUN. I don't know anything about it, except that Suzanne Collins blurbed it and a qucik skim of the first few pages seemed interesting. That isn't what I'm ashamed about though. It's the other 40% off coupon. For... For...

FOR CASSIE CLAIRE'S CLOCKWORK ANGEL. *hangs head in shame* I feel dirty.

Honestly, I'm approaching this as a pathologist would an autopsy. Despite Cassie's well documented plagiarism in fandom, her YA's generated all kinds of crazy buzz and have sold like mad. I want to cut them up to see what makes them all that. No, I didn't buy The Mortal Instruments series, just CLOCKWORK ANGEL, which is a steampunky prequel set in Victorian England.

But OMG! there were so many other books there I wanted to get. So very many. However, with DragonCon this coming weekend, I figured it best to just use up my coupons, see what my weekend spending is like, and then pace my purchases more effectively after the event.
