stageira: Having seen that you might like Star Wars, here we go. Any day, have you read anything from the Expanded Universe. And if yes, which of the secondary characters are your favorites?
I have some books from the Star Wars universe on my Nook, but aside from Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which I read back in the 80’s and don’t remember well at all, I haven’t read any of the media tie-in books. However, since that’s not a very satisfying answer to the question, I think if I did any reading, I’d like to start with books set in the Old Republic time period.
I adore the Knights of the Old Republic video game, and even though it’s not as good, I also enjoy KOTOR: The Sith Lords. What I like about the games is that, as a player, you can go Light or Dark side, and the choices you make shape not only your alignment but also your party members. I love being able to explore the Star Wars galaxy, visit planets from the films and otherwise. The games have good narrative arcs (especially KOTOR), and since they are RPG’s, they let you immerse yourself in the universe. You get to interact with the Jedi Masters and Sith Lords, craft your own lightsaber. In The Sith Lords, you can train your party members to be Jedi as well.
In KOTOR, my favorite character is Carth Onasi. He’s the romance arc for a female PC, and he’s got that tragic, haunted past that I find delicious. When the main character…uh…discovers her identity (sorry for vagueness, but I don’t want to spoiler if people haven’t played), his past makes that revelation especially difficult.
In The Sith Lords, my favorite characters are Atton Rand and Visas Marr. With Atton (again, aside from being the romance arc), I enjoy how his past profession has scarred him and leads to much angst on his part as he falls for the main character. With Visas, I love her backstory, keep imagining her the only living soul on a planet killed by the Sith. On a purely superficial level, I also love her costume, and in the game, I enjoy bringing her back to the Light Side after stealing her from her Sith master.
