Day 5

In your own space, talk about a creator. Show us why you think they are amazing. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

While I have been lucky enough to know many really talented writers and artists, since I’m limited to talking about one person, it would be [livejournal.com profile] caras_galadhon. Honestly, if it wasn’t for her, I probably wouldn’t be in fandom in the same way I am. Before the conference when she presented a paper on Star Wars fandom, I was a fannish lurker. I read, I commented. I’m not sure that I produced fic. After we met, I started writing fic (with her and on my own). I also took up fandom as something to look at through a scholarly lens.

She’s a fantastic writer. But don’t just take my word for it. Go look here. and has the same username on the AO3. She’s my best beloved beta and co-mod and co-writer and friend.

Day Six

In your own space, share a book/song/movie/tv show/fanwork/etc that changed your life. Something that impacted on your consciousness in a way that left its mark on your soul. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

If I had to pick just one work that impacted me the most, it would have to be Lord of the Rings, both the books and the films. Clashes of light and dark, hope and despair, sacrifice and greed, salvation and damnation, heroism and cowardice: LOTR has it all. The conflicts that play out in the story happen on a large scale (between kingdoms and rulers) and between individuals. Often, it is precisely those small actions (or inactions) the change the course of the world. I like to think that can happen.

The books really brought to life (through the histories, poetry, song, languages) a world in a way that no novel before it had. I’ve read several copies of LOTR into oblivion in paperback form because re-readings allowed me to keep living in and experiencing Middle Earth as I worked my way from chapter to chapter.

The films made the books more personal. Characters I liked became more than types or archetypes. They became more human, and I loved them even more. Because PJ and crew took such pains with details of setting and costume and prop, they also made the world come alive in much the same way as Tolkien did.

How did it change my life? It shaped my reading and what sorts of texts I chose to study. It inspired me creatively. It gave me light, when all other lights seemed dim or to have gone out.
