I don't read RPS, so can't speak to that, but I've read and occasionally enjoyed BDSM in several fandoms (Highlander, both Stargates, Buffyverse, NCIS).
I've disliked or felt indifferent to far more BDSM fics than I've liked, though.
I think that's because BDSM in and of itself is not one of my kinks, so the mere presence of the kink or its trappings isn't enough to do it for me.
What's important to me is powerful emotion, intimacy, and character insight. Good BDSM can be almost unparalleled in its capacity to bring out all of these. In particular, BDSM (at least when it's written the way I like) is profoundly intimate, and that's a bulletproof kink.
