I voted this morning. I don't think my vote will change my red state blue, but I'm hoping to contribute to the purpling of historically red Georgia. For the first time since I moved to the South, I had to wait in line at the polling location. For the first time, my superwhite district had a more diverse group of people waiting to vote.

When I was leaving, I was walking to my car, just about there, when another guy was leaving his car to go in to vote. Our gazes crossed, and he smiled at me and said, "Good luck today." I wished him luck as well.

And at that moment, during that exchange, I thought, "This is what our political system is about." Not the non-stop assholery and ignorance we've been subjected to for the last 15 months. People coming out and having a say. People being polite and civil to one other. People respecting each other's participation without regard to which side of the political fence they sit on.

It was a small thing. But it made me feel better about this election than I had in a long time.
