It's surprising how many managers/directors think that surrounding themselves by people smarter than them is a bad idea. Honestly, I would want the best and brightest around me, because that allows everyone to shine and to make good things great things. I get that people feel threatened because they're deeply insecure and afraid of being upstaged, but when things are coming apart and people are offering their experience and help, turning them away because you can't admit you're wrong or can't accept trying something new or admitting you need help, makes you a douchebag.
