This has been a very dark week. First, we lost David Bowie. Now, Alan Rickman. I'm not even sure what to say tonight.

When my one officemate announced that Rickman had died, I immediately hit the Internet because there was a part of me that didn't believe him, wouldn't accept it. Not another one. Not so soon.

I hear the clickity click of typing from our third officemate who said, "Oh, hey. It's the guy who played Snape in Harry Potter." So while I was trying to shelter behind denial, he was trying to figure out just who the fuck Rickman was. Boor.

Like Bowie, Rickman spent a lot of time in our living room. From ROBIN HOOD (which we watched for him) to DIE HARD to DOGMA. From SENSE AND SENSIBILITY to SWEENEY TODD. The sis and I just watched SWEENEY TODD--I'd seen it before, she hadn't--over the holidays. The Rickman/Depp "Pretty Women" duet from the film is on my MP3 player. Oh, yeah. And he was in that little film series. The one based on the books about a schoolboy with a talent for magic. You know the one.

Rickman's voice was magic, his performances were magic. He was magic.

And now that magic is gone.

I saw Robin Hood under protest when it came because I dislike Kevin Costner, but then Alan Rickman happened. And never left, he was one of those ators who always did a good job, even in a bad movie.

I loathe Costner too, but I'll always watch ROBIN HOOD. For Rickman.

I don't watch a lot of stuff, but for me Alan Rickman was Snape - oh, he played him well! I love to do his welcome to potions speech - and Alexander Dane/Dr Lazarus in Galaxy Quest. I adore that movie but Rickman gave a so many shades of grey performance.

Rickman was a perfect Snape. Just perfect. I can't really say what role was my favorite because his performances were always so wonderful, no matter what film he was in.

I remember when I first started with Harry Potter, when there were just books and the films weren't even a thought; I think the third book was just set to be released, so I asked a friend if she'd let me look at her copy of the first one, just to see what the fuss was about. Ten minutes later I'm hooked, and I shared this new and interesting thing with my mother. We liked to read in bed when I was a kid, and one of the things we'd always do is imagine who would play what character if a book were made into a movie. With Harry Potter we both said that the only person who could play Snape was Alan Rickman. No other name came up. And then a few years later . . .

I didn't start into the books until GOBLET OF FIRE. By then, releases were newsworthy events, and I hadn't reserved a copy of the book. But I found one at B. Dalton's at Great Lakes Mall. I picked it up with the three previous books, and read them all over the weekend.

And then it happened. You're a good caster. ^_^

I just thought it was really funny when they announced the cast and when they said who was going to be playing Snape, both my mother and I looked at each other and said "We called it, didn't we??"

I'd heard about them some but wasn't really interested, and it was one of the girls at the barn where I used to ride that was devouring them, so I asked her if I could take a peek. Usually if I open a book and find myself ten to twenty pages in within a few minutes, I know it's then hopeless to resist. ;)
