Challenge #12

In your own space, tell us who you would recast in a film, tv series or webseries, or maybe someone voicing a cartoon or videogame. Or who would you cast to play a character in a book, comic or maybe even your own fiction! Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Oooph. This one is a tough one for me, since I don’t usually play the casting game when I’m reading or writing. If I’m reading something that’s going to made into a movie or series, I have an idea of the characters, but I don’t immediately cast them. I suppose the closest I get is when the same role is played by different actors (e.g., different versions of Pride and Prejudice or Les Miserables), I will generally prefer one of the performances.

If someone feels miscast in a role, I can pinpoint what doesn’t work for me in their physicality or voice or performance, and sometimes I’ll think, “Y would have been a better choice for that role,” but often, I focus on the issues I had rather than going that step further and recasting the role.

I’ve tried to cast in my original fiction. I really have. I’ve spent time looking through images and art and been left feeling frustrated. I never really manage to hit the target, or I might hit it too well and feel penned in by the choice I’ve made.

I suppose that response might be similar to the “don’t show the monster until you absolutely have to” impulse in horror films. Once the monster is revealed, it has crystallized into a specific form and that frisson of dread and unease that comes from the unknown or obscured is lessened. However, leaving the realms of horror aside, once a character has been cast, they lose their imaginative malleability. I can’t play with them in my mind in the same way I can if they are grounded in a real person.

“don’t show the monster until you absolutely have to”

I love this as a rationale. It makes total sense that you wouldn't want to feel unwittingly hemmed in by a particular casting, and then potentially lose the imaginative zing.

I think about things the same way, a character is as they are portrayed, but oh my goodness you say it so much better!

“don’t show the monster until you absolutely have to”

Mmmmm, yes. Actually, go a step further and say never show the monster unless you actually have to. The reader/viewer imagination will view that role just fine, and probably better than you could.

Actually, I wonder if this is the problem with casting OCs that you haven't finished writing yet, and hence the source of your frustration? Because 'real life' casting happens after the character is written and finished (usually), not while they're still in the process of being produced.
